ASUS • PRIME B840-PLUS WIFI
An AM5 platform with the layout thought through.
The PRIME B840-PLUS WIFI combines an ATX layout with DDR5, three M.2 slots and both wireless and wired networking. Its rear USB-C connection, flexible M.2 heatsink and BIOS FlashBack button add practical detail. Plan the expansion slots around the chosen Ryzen processor and shared chipset lanes to make the most of the available connections.

AM5 foundation
Begin with the exact CPU match.
The AM5 socket supports listed Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 desktop processors, with ASUS specifying support up to 170W CPUs. Check the processor’s minimum BIOS against the exact board support list. The rear BIOS FlashBack button provides a supported firmware-update route; follow the manual and exact-model file instructions before use.
DDR5 memory
Capacity is part of a qualified configuration.
Four slots provide dual-channel DDR5 with EXPO and AEMP options. The current manufacturer specification lists up to 256GB total and 7600+MT/s with overclocking. Neither figure guarantees every CPU, DIMM kit or four-module population. Start a two-module kit in A2/B2 and check the exact CPU, BIOS and qualified memory entry before choosing higher-capacity modules.
Expansion planning
Length and lane count are different things.
The main graphics slot runs PCIe 4.0 x16 with listed Ryzen 9000/7000 processors, while Ryzen 8000 configurations use x8 or x4 according to the CPU. The three chipset x16-length slots are electrically one x4 and two x1, plus a separate x1 slot. The chipset x4 slot drops to x1 when any of the other shared chipset slots is occupied, so plan capture, network and storage cards together.
Storage layout
Three M.2 positions. Distinct roles.
M.2_1 accepts a 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD. M.2_2 also accepts 2280 drives, operating at PCIe 4.0 x4 with Ryzen 9000/7000 and x4 or x2 with Ryzen 8000 depending on the processor. M.2_3 accepts 2242 / 2260 / 2280 PCIe 3.0 x4 drives from the chipset. Four SATA ports support additional drives, and the flexible M.2 heatsink can be positioned over a supported primary M.2 slot.
Connected setup
Fast wired networking, with wireless alongside.
Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet complements 2×2 Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. The 6GHz band requires an appropriate router, regional permission and Windows 11 or later. Rear USB includes 10Gbps Type-C and Type-A, two 5Gbps Type-A and four USB 2.0 ports. Internal headers add front USB-C, two 5Gbps ports and four USB 2.0 ports when the case provides the matching connections.
Build and control
Make room for airflow and access.
The 8+2+1 phase power design, VRM heatsinks and flexible M.2 cooling support a considered build. CPU, CPU OPT and AIO pump headers join four chassis-fan headers. Q-Antenna, Q-DIMM, Q-Slot and the pre-mounted I/O shield help during assembly, while Q-LED Core provides diagnostic signalling. Three addressable lighting headers work with compatible Aura Sync hardware.
